Evergen

A Book Cover Design

Personal projects are a great opportunity to explore new ideas, grow as a creative and just have fun. This personal project developed from watching the Game of Thrones series. As a fan of the George Martin book and TV series, the idea came to create a book cover for the first book in a hypothetical spin-off series of one of the lead characters, Arya Stark. The series follows Arya from where she left off in the TV series. At the end of Game of Thrones TV series, Arya, the youngest of the Stark family boards a ship and sets sail for parts unknown.

The title of the new George Martin series is “Evergen”. The Evergen are seven creatures of great power who each serve as living protectors of every Element (Water, Nature, Fire, Earth, Light, Darkness, and Spirit). They reside in the Everworld, and are physical incarnations of their respective Element. The Evergen series will tell the story of Arya’s adventures and encounters with each of these creatures. In book 1, Arya encounters the Water creature as she sails across the high seas and finds more than she bargained for.

The challenge for this project was to create not only a book cover that presented a representation of the Game of Thrones series, but also a plot which acted as a logical continuation to the story. The design for the cover would be a reflection of the plot.

The design assets were gathered: sand representing ripples of waves, an astrolabe representing navigating rough waters and bronze to mimic the time period. Bronze was incorporated into the lettering. The lettering was typography similarly used for the Game of Thrones series. The blue was chosen to represent the high seas. A star burst was added to the astrolabe as an homage to “spark of curiosity”.

This project was conceived to be an on going exploration. There are after all still six more elements to “write” about, Nature, Fire, Earth, Light, Darkness, and Spirit.
